Holman Racing
I would like to introduce Chelsea Holman. Chelsea is a 15 year old Cairns girl who attends grade 10 at St Mary’s College. She is anything but a typical girl as she has a passion for motor racing. This passion was ignited by her father’s long interest in cars and motor racing. Her first smell of petrol fumes was at the speedway at the age of about six weeks. It was inevitable that Chelsea would be involved in car racing of some sort. She started racing at age 6 years in midget karts at the Mako Track in Mareeba. She showed talent early by winning her first year’s competition points score by simply out racing all others, mostly boys of course!
She continued her winning by taking out the following two years competitions in midgets and then rookies. The fields were small but all could see that this girl liked speed.Chelsea’s real talent started to show when she raced in the junior division at age 11yrs. This class allows for early entry at 11 yrs after 8 rookie races, and caters for ages up to the end of the 16th year.
To be racing against boys of that age should be a bit daunting for an 11 year old girl but Chelsea took it up to them by winning her first race & continuing to dominate for all local competition that year. Local race fields usually vary from about 9 to 15 competitors in this class. As her father realised that she was showing skills of more mature racers, he has kept Chelsea in good equipment by updating karts & engines as soon as the family budget allowed.
The Cliché “Looks can be deceiving”, is never truer than with Chelsea. The pretty young girl in the pits emits that “Couldn’t hurt a fly” image but on the track no prisoners are taken. Its her killer instincts that help get her to the front. While most others are settling in at the start of the race, Chelsea is well known for taking valuable places in the early laps.
She has a will to win and no fear when it comes to close risky moves as she knows that they make the difference between winners and losers. The family travels long distances to keep the opposition as competitive as possible and to continue to improve Chelsea’s skills. In 2005, Chelsea competed at 27 race meetings at tracks from Cairns to Bundaberg. The trend continued in 2006 with 31 meetings from Cairns to Wollongong. In 2006 she doubled up the duties by racing 2 classes in 23 of those meetings, a task most mature male racers would agree is a tough job. She began to increase her body weight which allowed her to race in both Junior Light and Junior Heavy classes.

In September 2006, Chelsea realised a personal Goal by winning the Queensland Closed Championship for Junior National Heavy. This race alone gave notice to all that Chelsea is and will continue to be a threat at all events entered.

Chelsea has had a successful start to 2008 bringing home a succession of trophies. She hasn't had much time to race locally in Cairns but with the help of major sponsors such as Trinity Petroleum Services - the team have travelled afar. Chelsea competed earlier this year in the YOUNG GUNS series in Lismore NSW- it was the first time on this track but that didn't dampen her spirits. It wasn't a fun filled weekend with loads of crashes and tackling from other opponents however Chelsea still ended up on the podium.

She has also competed in the QLD Country titles in Mackay earlier this year taking out 1st in Junior National Heavy and 3rd in Junior National Light. This was a meeting in the race and not much fun at all. But rain and all the show must go on!

Another popular event is the two track challenge - held over 1 weekend but with one day of racing in Rockhampton followed the next day with racing in Gladstone. Chelsea raced superbly but had some bad luck in a couple of races. She managed to just roll across the finish line in Rocky with no chain, she had been knocked coming into the final corner of the last lap and was coming second. Luckily she held on for 6th. Even after winning the Pre-final and final in the JNH class she was still 1 point behind and could only manage 2nd place on the podium for overall points. Even after a DNF in JNL she still finished 3rd overall in points. So all in all it was a great weekend!

Next week 25th June 08 sees the team fly to Darwin (a huge thanks to Brian Flay for towing the trailer with all the karts and gear up there) to compete in the Northern Territory State Titles and back home on the Monday to gear up to leave the following day to head to Rockhampton the following weekend for the QLD State Titles where a massive 46 competitors will battle it out for the honour of State Title Holder. I will keep you posted!
